 +===Preface===
+Central part of the extruder or the injection
+ molding machine is the screw. No other construction unit in the plasticization
+ process has a similar significant influence in the quality of the final
+ product and the economy of the process. During the last years one has
+ found out that the developed “universal screws” do not meet today’s requirements.
+ Insufficient melting qualities, low melt throughput or low machine efficiency
+ force the plastic industry to break new ground. Trend is towards “lean
+ solutions”, which are customised to the material, the process and the
 + product.
 +
 +
+The complexity of the plasticization itself
+ and the increasing number of innovative screw and plant concepts complicates
+ handling of the subject. To date, decisions have primarily been made on
+ the basis of “empirical values” and experimental investigations. The <span
 + style="font-weight: bold;">REX/PSI</span> simulation program has been
+ developed by way of an alternative to the frequently employed trail-and-error-approach.
+ This can be used in the layout and optimization of extruders (<span style="font-weight: bold;">REX</span>
 + respectively injection plasticising units (<span style="font-weight: bold;">PSI</span>).</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">&#160;</p>
+<p style="text-align: justify;">By use of the software, applicable on each
+ usual PC-desktop, significant parameters for the assessment of the process
+ can be simulated. Additionally, different program features support the
+ systematical optimization of single geometrical parameter and the layout
 + of complete machine lines.</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">&#160;</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">In the framework of a community research
+ project the simulation programs have been continuously advanced since
+ 1989. By derivation of more precise calculation models and by implementation
+ of current screw geometries the software is continuously adopted to the
+ growing needs of the user. Due to this the programs provide for a comprehensive
+ contribution to the assessment and optimization of single screw machines
 + in the industrial operation.</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">&#160;</p>
+<p style="text-align: justify;">In the present manual the application of
+ the software is explained. The theoretical approaches which are the basis
+ for the calculations are introduced by a number of different publications
+ and dissertations. A detailed list of literature can be found in the appendix.</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">&#160;</p>
 +<p style="text-align: justify;">&#160;</p>
+<p style="text-align: justify;">Here again, we like to thank all the participants
+ in the community project who even by their engagement &#160;enabled the
+ creation of this simulation software. &#160;</p>
